Gulfport Shipbuilding, Port Arthur TX

(formerly Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works)

Most recent update: October 2, 2013.

Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works, Inc., was established in the 1930s.  It became a leading builder of ocean tugs in WWII and continued in that market after the war, when it was renamed Gulfport Shipbuilding Corporation.  It was acquired by Levingston Shipbuilding in 1970 and was primarily a repair yard from then on.  It closed in 1985, after the offshore market collapsed but had, in any case, been threatened with eviction by its landlord, the Kansas City & Southern Railroad.  The yard was located on the west side of the Sabine River, between the Port of Port Arthur and the bridge to Pleasure Island: the site has now been absorbed into the Port of Port Arthur but lies idle.  See what's left from the air on Google here.
