Todd Pacific Shipyards, San Pedro CA
Most recent update: September 18, 2010.
Los Angeles Shipbuilding was established as an emergency shipyard in 1917 but stayed in business after the war, primarily as a ship repair yard. The Navy invested $9mm in its facilities in 1941 but it never performed satisfactorily, was requisitioned by the Navy in December 1943 and turned over to Todd to manage. At its peak, Todd Los Angeles employed 12,000 people. Todd acquired the yard from the Navy in 1945 and operated it until 1989, when it was closed and liquidated. The yard's large but capacity-limited Synchrolift was sold to Malaysian Shipbuilding & Engineering. The property is now Pier 100 of the Port of Los Angeles' West Basin container terminal. You can see the site, including a lot of still undeveloped land, from the air on Google here.
