JeffBoat, Jeffersonville IN

(Self-Propelled Vessels)

Most recent update: August 1, 2014.

Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company, known as JeffBoat, was formed in 1940, to operate the shipyard acquired by the Navy from the Howard Shipyard Company, which had been building ships, boats and barges since 1834.  JeffBoat was a major builder of LSTs during WWII - wartime employment peaked at 13,000 - and then, in the 1960s, became the leading inland builder of towboats and barges that it still is today.  Between Howard and JeffBoat, over 13,000 vessels have now been built on this site, over the past 180 years, an astonishing record that requires eight pages for full documentation.  Click on one of the links below to go to one of the other seven pages.
