Higgins Industries, New Orleans LA

(later Equitable Shipyards, Halter - Equitable and now Trinity Yachts)

Most recent update: August 24, 2014.

The Higgins story is well documented but it is hard to find a definitive listing of the company's total output.  It is claimed that the company built 20,094 boats in WWII alone and the post-war hull numbers indicate about another 7,000.   Higgins operated seven separate plants in the New Orleans area and employed 20,000 people at its peak, but this empire declined rapidly after WWII.  Despite diversifying into the production of an attractive line in recreational motor boats, they closed in 1963. The main shipyard, the only one to be kept going after the war, was on the west side of the Industrial Canal, just north of the I-10 bridge.  It was taken over by Equitable Shipyards in 1967.  If anyone can fill any of the gaps in the table below or add details of the many smaller craft that Higgins built, both during and after the war, please e-mail me at timcolton@aol.com.  See the yard from the air on Google here.
