Consolidated Shipbuilding, Morris Heights NY

(consolidating Charles L. Seabury Co. and Gas Engine & Power Co.)

Most recent update: October 31, 2014.

Consolidated Shipbuilding was a prodigious builder of custom yachts, the result of the merger in June 1896 of Charles L. Seabury Co. and Gas Engine & Power Co.  Charles L. Seabury Co. was originally established in 1885, in Nyack NY, and was famous for its steam-powered yachts, while Gas Engine & Power Co. was originally established at about the same time, in Morris Heights NY, and was famous for its naphtha-powered launches.  Following the merger, the company operated under the cumbersome name of Charles L. Seabury Co. and Gas Engine & Power Co., Consolidated, but dropped all the old names and became plain Consolidated Shipbuilding after World War I.  At some point - it's not clear when - the Nyack shipyard was closed and all work was concentrated in NYC.  In addition, there was a period when some vessels were built in a yard on the Bronx Kill, but it's not clear where that yard was or when it was in operation.  Ultimately, all work was concentrated at the yard in Morris Heights, which was on Matthewson Road, at the southern end of what is now Roberto Clemente State Park: you can see the site from the air on Google here but there is no sign of a shipyard.  After WWII, Consolidated bought the Robert Jacob shipyard on City Island and closed the Morris Heights yard: see the Robert Jacob table for Consolidated's post-war production.  The company ceased to be an active boatbuilder in 1958 but a successor company continues as a yacht repair center.

In the table below, the first group of boats, with the 3-digit hull #s, are Seabury's, starting back in their Nyack shipyard and running through 1919; the second group, with the 4-digit hull #s, are Gas Engine & Power's, also through 1919; the third group, from 1920 on, are the combined Consolidated Shipbuilding hull #s.  Be warned that there is some confusion in the middle range of years, from 1913 through 1919, as to which boats were built by which company in which shipyard.  In addition, there may be a few boats in this table that were actually built by New York Yacht, Launch & Engine Co., which was located immediately next door to Consolidated in Morris Heights.  If anyone can add to or correct the table below, please send your info to me at timcolton@aol.com.  Many thanks to Alan Dinn, Historian of Purdy Boat Company, for his enormous contribution to this table.
