A total of 718 ocean tugs were built during WWII for the U.S. Army, by 46 shipbuilders and boatbuilders. Built in both steel and wood, they were designated as either large tugs (LTs) or small tugs (STs). Some STs were later reclassified as river tugs (RTs) and others were transferred to the Defense Production Corporation (DPC), which was the federal agency responsible for building defense facilities. The record of construction after the war is even more fuzzy. This table is far from complete: if anyone can fill any of the gaps, please e-mail me at tim@coltoncompany.com
