The offshore drilling rig was invented in Texas and, until the early 1970s, almost all the world's rigs were built in U.S. yards.  All that has now changed: of the 327 rigs listed here, only 31 were built in a year beginning with a 2.  With regard to the accuracy and completeness of this table, it's a little difficult to track the inactive rigs: some may be cold-stacked, others may have been scrapped.  If anyone has any information that would help, please share it with me by sending it to timcolton@aol.com
