Tankers Built in U.S. Shipyards Between WWII and the MMA of 1970

The pressures of post-war recovery drove a significant increase in the demand for oil, but the near destruction of the European and Japanese shipbuilding industries made this demand hard to meet.  As a result, 237 tankers were built in U.S. shipyards in the 25 years between WWII and 1970, an average of close to ten ships a year.  Of this output, Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point yard was the big producer, building 90, Newport News 45, Beth Quincy 43, Sun Ship 34, Ingalls 13, New York Ship 9 and Avondale 3.
