Crowninshield Shipbuilding was a small shipyard designed for the construction of ocean tugs for the U.S. Shipping Board and owned by the super-rich Crowninshield family. Crowninshield kept on building tugs after the war was over and was one of the yards that built "six-bitters" for the Coast Guard in the mid-20s. It closed in 1929. The site, which was formerly used by Reed Brothers Shipyard, was at the south end of Riverway Road, in South Somerset: it is now occupied by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding and its neighbor, Fortier Boats. See it from the air on Google here. Note that between 1920 and 1945 there was another commercial shipyard in Somerset, called Somerset Shipyard: its record is shown below but its location is unclear. |
