EASTERN SHORE SHIPBUILDING

Sharptown MD

Most recent update: August 31, 2021.

The shipyard that came to be known as Sharptown Marine Railway was originally established by Matthew Marine in or around 1818 and was primarily a maintenance facility, shifting to new construction, only after the Civil War.  It failed just before World War One and, after a very brief spell as White Shipbuilding, was restructured as Eastern Shore Shipbuilding, building harbor tugs.  Unfortunately, it had no success in this market and closed after the war.  The yard was at the foot of Railway Street, where Cope Bennett Park is now: see the site from the air on Google here.  Its record is not well documented and a bit confusing, especially with regard to the wartime output: if anyone can add to or otherwise improve the table below, please send your info to timcolton@aol.com
