LAKE WASHINGTON SHIPYARD
Houghton WA
|
Most recent update:
October 22, 2016.
|
This shipyard was started by George Bartch and
Harry Tompkins in 1900: in 1907 they sold it
to their premier client, John Anderson, of Anderson
Steamboat Company. The Anderson yard built wooden tugs
and ferries until 1923, when it was sold to Charles Burckardt, who renamed
it The Lake
Washington Shipyard and converted it to steel shipbuilding. During WWII,
its workforce grew to 9,000 employees and it was a major repairer of small
ships as well as a builder. It
closed in the 1960s and its site is now the commercial/residential
development at Carillon Point: see it from the air on Google
here. If anyone can add to the table
