MARINE IRON & SHIPBILDING Duluth MN |

Marine Iron & Shipbuilding Company was started by Napoleon Grignon in 1880. After WWI, it became a major contractor for the Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard, but closed after WWII. The yard was on W. Railroad Street at the foot of 11th Avenue West, roughly where Georgia-Pacific and North America Salt are today: see the site from the air on Google here. It had two ways, launching southwesterly into Slip #6, which was later filled in but you can see where it was on Google. The yard closed in the 1950s.
