MARTINOLICH SHIPBUILDING Dockton WA, San Francisco CA and Tacoma WA |
Most recent update: January 3, 2021 |
Martinolich Shipbuilding was started by John A. Martinolich in Dockton and closed in 1930. His four sons restarted it in Tacoma in 1935, later expanding to San Francisco (actually Oakland) and, briefly, to San Diego. The Tacoma yard was at 1112 Alexander Avenue, on the East side of the Blair Waterway, where Orion Marine is today: it was closed in 1974. The San Francisco yard was the old Hanlon Shipbuilding yard at the foot of 5th Avenue, in Oakland: it was sold to Crowley in 1953. The San Diego yard was at the foot of 28th Street, right in the middle of present-day NASSCO: it was sold to Lynch Shipbuilding in 1942 and was sold on to NASSCO in 1957. See the site of the Tacoma yard from the air on Google here. If anyone can fill any of the gaps in the table below, please send your info to timcolton@aol.com. Note that there were two earlier Martinolich shipyards, both started by Croatian immigrants of that name. One was started by Venanzio Martinolich, who was John A.'s uncle, in Port Guichon BC, in about 1892: it is not clear when it closed. The other was started by Matteo Martinolich in Gulfport MS, in the 1890s and appears to have closed in 1922. |
