John H. Mathis Company, Camden NJ

Most recent update: May 13, 2017.

John H. Mathis Company was started at the turn of the 19th century.  Mathis Yacht Building Company, with which it is often confused, was started in 1909 and operated in an adjacent facility at Cooper Point in Camden, just upstream of the Ben Franklin Bridge.  The former built work boats and the latter yachts and, during WWI, sub chasers.  Mathis Yacht Building relocated to Gloucester City NJ in mid-1942, but this yard carried on at Cooper Point until it closed in 1961.  It was later operated for a while by Camden Ship Repair and is now used by Weeks Marine.  Visit a website featuring the shipyard here: this site seems to confuse the two Mathis yards but it includes some great pictures and a reproduction of a 16-page brochure.  See the site of the shipyard from the air on Google here.  If anyone can fill any of the gaps in the table below, please e-mail me at timcolton@aol.com
