Southern Shipyard was founded in 1918 by O. A. Bloxom, helped by a loan of $275,275 from the Emergency Fleet Corporation for the construction of a 3,000-ton Crandall marine railway. It closed in 1934, however, and its marine railway was moved to Norshipco. The yard occupied a 17-acre site on the west side of the Newport News Small Boat Harbor: since this site is also described as facing Hampton Roads, it must have been where the sewage plant is now. They are described as building yachts and launches, but the only vessels for which I can find a record are the Coast Guard cutters listed below.
