The table below shows the changes since 1914 in the size of the US-flag fleet of self-propelled seagoing commercial ships of at least 100 gross tons, compared to the world fleet.  Obviously we came out of both world wars with a lot more tonnage than we needed for peacetime trade, but the decline of the past 20 years is depressing.
