U.S. Builders of Small Ships, Boats and Barges

These companies operate shipyards which are relatively small but which are (or were) capable of building the smaller types of governmental and commercial vessels, such as patrol craft, research vessels, tugs, towboats, offshore service vessels, fishing vessels, ferries, tour boats, work boats and barges.  A few builders of recreational boats have slipped in, but only those which are real boatyards, not boat manufacturing facilities.  In addition to the 358 yards listed here, there are many more boatbuilders listed in the "Other Boatbuilders" section, which are either defunct or too small to make it into this section.  This table is structured in three groups: Group 1 lists those boatbuilders which are active competitors for new construction contracts; Group 2 includes those boatbuilders which are still active but which have limited capacity, only occasionally build new boats or have recently dropped out of the new construction market; and Group 3 includes those boatbuilders which are no longer in business.
