U.S. BUILDERS OF SMALL VESSELS

Since WWII, close to 600 U.S. shipyards have built the smaller types of governmental and commercial vessels, such as patrol craft, research vessels, tugs, towboats, offshore service vessels, fishing vessels, ferries, tour boats and barges.  The table below is structured in four groups:

(A) 15 yards which are actively building significant numbers of the more complex types of small vessel;

(B) 71 yards which are actively building significant numbers of the simpler types of small vessel, such as towboats and inland barges;

(C) 107 yards which are active but which have only built a few boats in recent years;

(D) 195 yards which have built a significant number of boats since WWII but which are no longer active.

In addition to the yards listed, there are at least 200 more yards which have built governmental and/or commercial boats since WWII but which are too small to justify their own tables in this section.

Note also that this section does not include builders of recreational or other non-commercial boats unless they also build commercial variations, such as small passenger vessels or sport-fishing boats, and/or they operate waterfront boatyards rather than inland manufacturing facilities.
